چکیده
With the rapid growth in popularity of wireless data services and the increasing demand for wireless connectivity, Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) have become more widespread and are making their way into commercial and public areas being almost everywhere including business, office and home deployments. WLANs based on the IEEE 802.11 standards enjoy an exceptionally high popularity owing to their simplicity of setup, increased deployment flexibility, unlicensed frequency band, low cost and connectivity with minimal infrastructure changes. Lately, the need for Real Time (RT) multimedia services over WLANs is dramatically increased, including Voice over IP (VoIP), audio/video (AV) streaming, Internet videoconferencing, IPTV, distance learning, entertainment and gaming, and so forth.

Impact of Turnaround Time on Wireless Mac Protocols
Media access control (MAC) protocols for mobile ad-hoc networks are of interest in applications ranging from wireless local area networks (WLANs) to global skywave highfrequency radio networks. Much of the recent work in wireless MAC protocols has emphasized networks with short turnaround times (e.g., IEEE 802.11 WLANs). However, some wireless networks suffer lengthy turnaround times in the phy...
متن کاملToday & Tomorrow: IEEE 802.11 WLAN Security
After all those enhancements in Internet technology, the Internet has become part of people’s lives, so they want to have it ready to use not only on their PCs but also in their mobile devices. WLANs have become very popular thanks to the development of IEEE 802.11 standard family. As wireless applications and systems are widely adopted wireless security is becoming increasingly important. Wire...
متن کاملComparative Performance Study of ADMR and ODMRP in the context of Wireless LANs and Wireless Sensor Networks
Wireless LANs (WLANs) and Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are two large groups of networks that have well established application ranges. Despite the fact that they address very distinctive groups of devices and have clearly differentiated wireless interfaces, there are certain similarities which push scientists to look for adopting solutions already designed for WLANs to WSNs. An example of th...
متن کاملQoS in IEEE 802.11-based wireless networks: A contemporary review
Apart from mobile cellular networks, IEEE 802.11based wireless local area networks (WLANs) represent the most widely deployed wireless networking technology. With the migration of critical applications onto data networks, and the emergence of multimedia applications such as digital audio/video and multimedia games, the success of IEEE 802.11 depends critically on its ability to provide quality ...
متن کاملCombined Tuning of RF Power and Medium Access Control for WLANs
Abstra t | Mobile communication systems like handhelds and laptops still suffer from low operation time due to limited battery capacity. We exploit the relative new approach of protocol harmonization to extend the time between battery charges in mobile devices using an IEEE 802.11 network interface. Many known energy saving mechanisms only concentrate on a single protocol layer while others onl...
